SUMMARY:I-29 Moo University Winter Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:I-29 Moo University Winter Virtual Workshop Will Focus on Dairy Sustainability\nNET Zero: If it’s Not Your Profitability\, What Is It? \nDairy Producers and Industry are invited to the I-29 MOO University Virtual Winter Workshop in partnership with Midwest Dairy & State Trade Associations being held on Tuesday\, January 12\, 2021 from 10 AM to 1:30 PM. \nThis workshop will focus on the Net Zero Initiative and what the impact will be for dairy producers. Attendees will gain knowledge through a hands-on virtual experience of how sustainability practices are being implemented on dairy farms and within dairy processing plants. \nThe agenda includes: \n\n10:00 a.m. CST – Keynote: “Why Net Zero? Why Should Producers Care? Why Consumers Care about it? What it means to Producers & Industry”; Jim Wallace\, Senior Vice President – Environmental Research at Dairy Management Inc. and invited speaker: Krysta Harden\, Executive Vice President of Global Environmental Strategy at Dairy Management\, Inc. and Chief Operating Officer at U.S. Dairy Export Council.\n10:45 – 3 Virtual Sustainability Sessions – Interact with these presenters and learn how sustainability practices have been implemented on farm and in the industry.\n\nCover Crops: Cinnamon Ridge Farms – Donahue\, IA. This 5th generation farm was awarded the Farmers Assuring Responsible Management for Dairy Farms. They work to assure their customers that the milk and beef produced meets very high standards for sustainability and animal care. They milk Jersey cows using robots\, raise beef cattle\, pigs and chickens. They also produce corn\, soybeans and winter wheat\, while incorporating cover crops. Milk produced on the farm is processed into cheese on the farm.\nDairy Production Technology: Rosy-Lane Holsteins –Watertown\, WI. U.S. Dairy Sustainability 2020 Award Winner. Healthy cows and a healthy planet go hand-in-hand at Wisconsin’s Rosy-Lane Holsteins dairy. The emphasis on cow health started with incorporating cattle genetic technologies\, breeding cows that live longer and are less susceptible to disease and illness. Genetics has helped the farm produce 1.7 pounds of milk for every 1 pound of feed for the milking herd. The average U.S. dairy attains 1.5. Their higher average which equates to 70 more semi-tankers of milk/year utilizing the same inputs.\nDairy Processing Technology: Leprino Foods\, Greely\, Co is also a U.S. Dairy Sustainability 2020 Award Winner.\, This dairy plant exemplifies environmental sustainability with a replicable process that ensures no precious resource isn’t maximized. Built on an abandoned sugar-processing factory’s site\, it relies on a combined heat and power system with electricity from two natural gas turbines—meeting about 75% of the plant’s power needs. The plant also employed technology that uses water from milk during the cheesemaking process to clean the facility\, reducing the need for fresh water. Further\, that recycled water goes through treatment that results in feedstock for the plant’s anaerobic digester—which in turn creates renewable biogas. This and more adds up to $4.5 million in estimated annual energy cost savings from onsite natural gas turbines after a five-year payback. This portion of the program will conclude at 12:20\, followed by a Virtual Lunch starting at 12:30.\n\n\n\nMidwest Dairy and State Dairy Association will provide updates within their individual state breakout rooms (MN\, SD\, IA\, NE\, ND)\, concluding by 1:30 PM. \nThere is no registration fee\, but pre-registration is required by Jan. 11. To register or view full agenda\, visit https://extension.sdstate.edu/event/i-29-moo-university-virtual-winter-workshop or go to the I-29 Moo University website at https://dairy.unl.edu/i-29-moo-university. SUMMARY:9th Annual National Institute of Animal Agriculture (NIAA) Antibiotic Symposium
DESCRIPTION:For the past eight years\, a national dialogue focused on the use of antibiotics in food animals and the science surrounding antimicrobial resistance has been hosted by NIAA. Antibiotic stewardship and responsible use of antibiotics continue to be a top priority for the animal agriculture industry. \nThis year’s 9th Annual Antibiotic Symposium from the National Institute for Animal Agriculture\, in collaboration with the Iowa State University-based National Institute of Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Education (NIAMRRE) in Ames\, Iowa\, will expand its focus to include not only scientific updates on antimicrobial resistance\, but how research\, technology and innovation continue to impact what we know\, and why communication of science facts to consumers has been less than effective. \nAs the public is bombarded with inaccurate statistics\, misreported study results and opinions which align more with agendas than hard science\, the Symposium will include an added feature of how to take that knowledge to the public in an effective and positive manner. \nDeveloped in partnership with the Iowa State University Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication\, this collaborative conversation will provide space to discuss and learn new communication strategies to shift consumer attitudes in the future. \nTomorrow’s responsible antibiotic use will be shaped by consistent\, effective communication of scientific collaboration\, and the commitment of the animal agriculture industry and its allies to progress\, best practices and transparency in ways that build public trust. \nJOIN US IN AMES\, IOWA OCTOBER 15-17\, 2019 \nRegistration Website: https://www.animalagriculture.org/2019-Antibiotic-Symposium

SUMMARY:Planning For Profitability
DESCRIPTION:One-day program will focus on planning ahead while facing shrinking margins in production agriculture. \nDownload the flyer \nIowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach invites local farmers and agribusiness professionals to attend a free one-day Planning for Profitability workshop in either Rock Rapids or Decorah. \nPlanning for Profitability in a Changing Dairy Industry will focus on options to increase profitability when facing shrinking margins; risk management strategies and how they can benefit dairy operations; changes and requirements that ag lenders may be asking for when reviewing loan requests; and a review of the milk market. \nFred M. Hall\, Northwest Iowa dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach\, shared that the program is designed for dairy managers\, but all those involved in production agriculture – livestock producers\, crop farmers and agribusiness professionals that serve them – are welcome to attend and will find many parts of the program educational and relevant to their enterprises.\n“In production agriculture\, almost all producers are facing\, or will face\, shrinking margins\,” Hall said. “Our dairy men and women are definitely facing it right now\, so the program is geared towards them; however\, many aspects of the presentations will be relevant to all agriculture industries.” \nPlanning for Profitability will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will be offered in two different locations to accommodate as many participants as possible. The program will be hosted at Pinter’s Gardens and Pumpkins located at 2475 State HWY 9\, Decorah\, on July 31; and the following day\, Aug. 1\, the same program will be offered at the Forster Community Center in Rock Rapids. \nKey presentations include: \n\nCash versus accrual accounting and how it will be affected by changes in the tax laws – presented by Tom Thaden\, Eric Hofland and Reggie Hostetler\, Agriculture Consultants from the Northwest Iowa Farm Business Association;\nUsing FINBIN and DHIA data to predict financial success on small-medium sized dairies – presented by Joleen Hadrich\, Extension Economist and Associate Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota;\nThe value of a risk management strategy – presented by Cassie Monger\, Dairy Industry Specialist with Compeer Financial;\nDairy Market Outlook – presented by Fred M. Hall\, Northwest Iowa Dairy Specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.\nThe program will also feature a panel of local agricultural lenders who will discuss what they look for in the future of ag loans and financial decisions. In Decorah\, the panel will include Andy Ludeking\, Cresco Bank\, a Division of Decorah Bank & Trust Company; Reid P. Mahoney\, Freedom Bank; Cassie Monger\, Compeer Financial and Dan Kuboushek\, Citizens Savings Bank. In Rock Rapids\, the panel will consist of Brad Bruxvoort\, First State Bank Southwest; Chris Kayton\, Farm Credit Services of America; Dale Vanderberg\, Peoples Bank; and Troy Vander Stouwe\, Iowa State Bank.\n\nParticipants can select their preferred meeting date/location and register online at https://form.jotform.com/4Hregion1/planning-for-profitability\, or by calling 563-382-2949 to pre-register for the July 31 Decorah meeting; and 712-737-4230 for the Aug. 1 Rock Rapids meeting. \nThere is no fee to attend either session and lunch is provided; however\, pre-registration is required by July 26 to plan adequately for meals and materials. \nThe Planning for Profitability program is being hosted by ISU Extension and Outreach\, as part of I-29 Moo University. SUMMARY:Discover Dairy At The Round Barn
DESCRIPTION:Plymouth County Fair to Turn Round Barn into Dairy Destination \nThis county fair in northwest Iowa will offer hands-on\, goggles-on dairy experience for all ages. \nThe Plymouth County Fair will feature a variety of educational dairy and agricultural exhibits for this year’s fair\, which runs from July 24-28 in Le Mars. One of the highlights will be the Mobile Dairy Classroom\, a 40-foot mobile milking exhibit provided by the Southwest Dairy Farmers organization. Visitors will get to see exactly how milking is done\, using the mobile dairy parlor exhibit\, which also features a large-screen television\, to show realistic farm scenes and an educational slide show. \n“It really is an impactful program for youth\,” said Fred Hall\, dairy specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. \nHall said the fair staff and the staff at the ISU Extension and Outreach Plymouth County are making significant strides to highlight the dairy industry during this year’s fair. \n“Discover Dairy” is the theme for this year’s exhibits\, which include the Tonsfeldt Round Barn\, which will be decorated in a way that gives visitors the experience of stepping inside new carousal-style milking parlor installed at Perry Creek Dairy\, located west of Le Mars. \nLife-size photos will illustrate the modern way of milking\, from a parlor in which the carousel rotates. \nThe Plymouth County FFA is also organizing educational exhibits inside the barn\, explaining the importance of different dairy products\, how they’re processed and prepared\, and their nutritional value. \nThe fair will also feature a butter sculpture of the Tonsfeldt Round Barn\, created by Sarah Pratt\, known as “the butter lady\,” and the same artist who creates the butter cow at the Iowa State Fair. \nVisitors can also put on a pair of specially equipped goggles that give the participant a virtual tour of a local dairy farm\, including the milking parlor\, holding pens\, feed and more. The 3-D tour is provided by the Siouxland Ag in the Classroom\, and area FFA chapters. \nThe 3-D tour will be available Thursday through Sunday (July 25-28)\, beginning at 6 p.m. inside the round barn.\n“Since Le Mars is known as the ‘Ice Cream Capital of the World\,’ it seemed only appropriate to showcase the region’s dairy processors\, and dairy producers\,” said Jordan Sitzmann\, vice president for the Chamber of Commerce-Agriculture Division.
