SUMMARY:Dairy Discussions: Making Genetic Decisions Profitable
DESCRIPTION:The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team will host its annual Dairy Discussions Seminar on Tuesday\, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the ISU Extension and Outreach Sioux County office in Orange City. \nThis year’s focus is making genetic decisions profitable\, with discussions on crossbreeding\, pure-breeding\, genomics\, sexed semen and how to maximize profitability in the dairy industry. \nThe two key presentations include: \n\n“Dairy Crossbreds: Where is the profit at?” by Amy Hazel\, University of Minnesota\n“Application of Genomics and Sexed Semen to Maximize Profits” by Dr. James Koltes\, Iowa State University.\n\nThere will also be a producer panel which will focus on breeding decisions and profitability. Local panelists will include Eric Van Wyk\, Dykstra Dairy\, Maurice; Roger Stensland\, Stensland Bros. Dairy\, Larchwood; Darren Davelaar\, Country Edge Dairy\, Inwood; and Leroy Eggink\, Great Heritage Holsteins\, Sibley. \nThere is no fee to attend the program\, but registration is required. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the program begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. A free lunch is included and the program will adjourn at 2:00 p.m. \nTopics will include a discussion of how many replacement heifers are needed plus the importance of minimizing heat stress with NE Iowa Dairy Specialist Jenn Bentley; an update on the ISU dairy research herd at Ames with Miguel Rangel; and risk management strategies and the dairy market outlook with NW Iowa Extension Dairy Specialist Fred M.
